Nice Package, Shame If Anything Were To Happen To It

Just a quick grumble to start the day: when did delivery services get so breathtakingly gittish?

An Amazon order I made a couple of weeks ago was finally dispatched at the start of the week, and I missed both deliveries due to, you know, having a job.

The delivery service is now offering me two options.  I can either drive 30 miles to pick the package up, at a precisely arranged time and with my passport and a utility bill, or I can wait in from seven thirty am to seven thirty pm for them to drop it off.  And that has to be on a week day.

Anything else will cost me extra money: five pounds to choose something as obviously unreasonable as either a morning or an afternoon delivery, or ten pounds if I want it delivered on Saturday, which makes it more expensive than having simply gone for the first class option in the first place.

Right, that's better.  Rant over.  We now return you to your regularly scheduled program of ranting about comic books and American politics.

Can you not have it redelivered to your workplace?

If it's any consolation, delivery services have been this gittish in Oxford for at least 7 years. In this case, though, at least my nearest Royal Mail depot is no more than 10 minutes drive away. It was harder when I had no autobile available. It's still irritating and wasteful and means I often have to actually get up on a Saturday morning, which I feel violates some of my civil rights. (yes, kidding.)

My work closes at half five, though, and opens at eight. That increases the likelihood of the parcel getting through, but there's still 150 minutes of dead space. And you just know what's gonna happen...

It's actually a right-wing conspiracy to force everyone into marriages where the woman stays at home.

Nah, one thing is certain, they never deliver *early*. I'd definitely give it a try getting it delivered at work, although if there's no way you can stay on beyond half five you might be stuffed.

Jamie's quite right; for every customer cursing that their parcel hasn't been delivered there's a delivery man cursing that someone had the parcel sent to their home rather than work address when they knew they wouldn't be there.

I really can't see the justification for the hassle they cause in getting it redelivered, but there's any number of valid reasons why it couldn't be left in the first place: the driver might not have seen anywhere safe to hide it; it could have required a signature and none of your neighbours were around for the same reason; it could have been marked "address only" which means it has to go to you.

The thing about having it delivered to your workplace is that the driver will already know/soon learn/make a fair guess at what time it's open, so you're more likely to get it that way; they will be able to plan the day's route to be there at the right time. As opposed to a home delivery which is down to pure luck.

P.S. I know you don't look at it so much any more, but nice timing with Wednesday's xkcd.

Paul, I so almost put up that link to xkcd, but forgot about it at the last minute! Great minds etc...
