Quz 1

Since I've now started compiling and delivering a pub quz (that's not a typo, it's college tradition) once a month, I figured it might be nice to reproduce the questions here, and let you have a pop at them. Unsurprisingly, no Googling or other research is allowed.

I'm not sure how to work this so that whomever shows up first doesn't get all the glory, but I'll post the whole thing up this time round and consider whether it needs any fine-tuning for next time.

Edit: How about this. Anyone who wishes can leave answers in comments, and I'll provide answers and marks next week. Probably Tuesday, so that it's out of the way before I'm banished to Granada.

Round 1: Word Round.

Every answer to this round is two words, one of which is a colour (eg: Charlton Heston film set in 2022: Soylent Green).

1 An acute viral hemorrhagic disease, with symptoms including nausea and fever, which is spread by female mosquitoes, and originated in Africa but reached other areas due to the 16th Century slave trade. (Yellow fever)

4 Who had abandoned a planned assassination attempt and was eating a sandwich in a Sarejevo cafe when he saw the car carrying his target stall just outside, allowing him to complete his mission by shooting his victim in the neck? (Gavrilo Princip)

5 For which 1992 film did Marissa Tomei win an Oscar for portraying a Brooklyn hairdresser whose intimate knowledge of cars saves to innocent men from the electric chair? (My Cousin Vinny)

Round 4: Song Synonyms (Each of these is a Michael Jackson song written as something between a collection of synonyms and a cryptic crossword puzzle. “Atrocious” = “Bad“)

3. Frictionless gangster ("Smooth Criminal")

3. Sirrius
6. George foreman

will however guess

1. Lennie's gun
2. Crete

do we get scored now?

SpaceSquid said...

You got 13, Spielbergo. You'll have to wait until Tuesday to get the actual answers.

Unless Jamie manages to remember any character names from Of Mice and Men, his total is 15.

Had you been in a team together, however, you'd have scored 19.

I should note that I managed to get one of the answers incorrect running the quiz last night, by fucking up the research and confusing the current Suez canal with an older waterway. Thus, in order to beatlast night's winners, you'll need 30 points or more. In order to place higher than 3rd, you'll need at least 28.

jamie said...

By my count I got 18... are you sure I got 15?

Dan Edmunds said...

Only 13? Damn and I was fairly confident on 15 of them, and hoping at least some of my guesses paid off. Now off to google...

jamie said...

Actually scratch that, I was wrong about the Model T by two years; still, I think I've got 17 right.

I've double checked, Jamie, and I get the same total; unless you want me to count changing Jurassic to Cretaceous. There are a couple of answers in there that seem entirely plausible but are in fact wrong. Canis Majoris, for example, isn't a star at all, it's a description for all stars in that constellation. If you'd put Alpha Canis Majoris, you'd be right; though the more common name is Sirius.

Midget_Yoda gets 23, and Tomsk 22. Had the four of you formed a team, your total would now be 28, putting you in third place (two teams hit 29).

I'll mark Gooder's list once he's finished, but I can tell you that already adding his answers would have got you into the tie-break for first place.

Chemie said...

Well I hope some chemists told you off about general knowledge question 4. Shame on you.

SpaceSquid said...

Is it time for my six p.m. scolding?

Chemie said...

Yes it is I'm afraid. Whilst I imagine your answer was 'Ammonia' the actual answer is 'an alkaline' as is evidenced by the number of ammonia-free hair bleachs on the market. Also if the word 'bleach' is a verb instead of a noun and we take proteins to be chemicals then the answer would be 'an alkaline and two types of melanin'.

I learned something in my first year! Hair bleaching and explosives. All the important things

Now where's our pringles and cheese cubes?

SpaceSquid said...

Get with the times, Granddad! We haven't had Pringles and cheese cubes since the Elm Tree changed owners last year. You can instead have unidentifiable brown sludge and rice.

You're welcome.
